Tom Simpson Announces His Retirement
After an incredible coaching career spanning decades of dedication, development, and distinction, Coach Tom Simpson is retiring.
HARTSVILLE, SC - After an incredible coaching career spanning decades of dedication, development, and distinction, Coach Tom Simpson is retiring from his position as head coach of Coker University's men's and women's tennis programs, effective Oct. 1.
Simpson first joined the Coker family in 2011, bringing with him a wealth of experience from his time as a professional coach at prestigious tennis clubs and academies, including the Smith Stearns Tennis Academy and several elite South Carolina clubs. A USPTA P1 and USPTR-certified instructor, Coach Simpson brought not just technical expertise, but also a passion for character development and academic excellence.
In just his second season at Coker, Simpson earned Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year and USPTA Southern Division Coach of the Year honors. That historic 2012-13 season saw the men's team go a perfect 10-0 in conference play, break program records, and gain national recognition. Under his guidance, Andre Staab became the first Coker tennis player ever ranked both nationally and regionally.
Following a brief departure from Coker to serve at Bishops Gate Golf Academy, Simpson returned in 2017 and led the program into a new era of success. His second stint was marked by both athletic achievement and academic excellence. Players like Mark Watt, Hunter Horton, and Henrik Hellbe flourished on the court and in the classroom, collecting SAC honors and prestigious academic awards, including the SAC President's Award and SAC Elite 20 Award.
Simpson's dedication to excellence was never more evident than in the last few seasons. Under his leadership, the women's team achieved its best season in program history in 2025 with a 14-7 record, their first-ever nationally ranked win and their first appearance in ITA Division II National Poll, ranking as high as No. 43 in the country. Standout players like Jessica Binzari, 2025 SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year and the SAC Minority/International Woman of the Year Jade Bellegy, and 2025 SAC Freshman of the Year Ilona Hernandez-Sanchez emerged as top national competitors and elevated the program's profile on the national stage.
Beyond the accolades, Simpson leaves behind a legacy built on integrity, hard work, and the unwavering belief in the potential of student-athletes. He inspired countless players to not only reach their potential on the court but to grow as leaders, scholars, and people.
As he steps away from the courts, we celebrate a remarkable career and say a heartfelt thank you. Thank you, Simpson, for your years of leadership, your commitment to excellence, and the lasting impact you've made on the Coker community. Your legacy will echo through the lives of every athlete you've coached and every match played on the Coker courts.
