Late Rally Falls Short At #8 North Greenville
North Greenville uses early runs to take down Coker Wednesday night.
TIGERVILLE, SC. - North Greenville scored all of their runs over the first five innings, as Coker's late push fell short Wednesday night. The Cobras were held to just four hits on the night, as North Greenvile's pitching staff was able to keep Coker off balance.
BY THE NUMBERS:
Score: North Greenville 9, Coker 5
Records: Coker 25-18 | North Greenville 38-8
Location: Tigerville, SC.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Coker struck first Wednesday night when they plated two runs in the first inning. Ick Cirino singled to lead the game off, and a batter later Hunter Poole walked. After a throwing error to move them over, Rocco Wojcik brought in Cirino on a groundout. Jaylen Mack then hit a sacrifice fly, and Coker quickly led 2-0.
North Greenville responded, showing why they are a top 10 team in the nation. They scored runs in the first five innings, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead. Landon Reeves came on in relief for the Cobras, and shut down the Trailblazers. He pitched 3.0 innings, allowing 0 runs, and just 2 hits in his outing.
After threatening in the fifth and sixth innings, Coker finally broke through in the seventh. Coker scored three runs on the inning thanks to their aggressive style of play. They didn't record a hit in the inning, but it was the pressure on the basepaths, and putting the ball in play that paid dividends to the Cobras.
Alex Lazar reached base to start the inning on an error followed by back to back free passes, and the Cobras quickly found themselves with the bases loaded. Adam Wilkerson produced the first run of the inning on a groundball to the shortstop. Ick Cirino was hit by a pitch, and Rocco Wojcik produced a sacrifice fly to plate all three of Coker's runs on the inning.
From there, North Greenville buckled down and kept Coker off the scoreboard for the remainder of the final two innings to earn a 9-5 win.
